Music Played In Vampire Diaries

Continuing the public's obsession with all things vampire, the CW network is now showing "The Vampire Diaries" on Thursdays, which started September 10th, 2009 in the time slot previously occupied by the network's long-running "Smallville".

The music played in the series has played a big part in the success of the show and fan forums all over the world are eager to get the lowdown on who sang the music played in each episode. There is little doubt that a Vampire Diaries Soundtrack album is not far off and the album will be a resounding success.

The series is based on books of the same name by author L. J. Smith, although some changes in characters' names and back-stories have been made from the original books. Central characters are Elena Gilbert played by Nina Dobrev, (best known for her role as Mia in "Degrassi: The Next Generation") and the two vampire brothers, one good, one evil, who are battling for her affection. The action will impact Elena's family and friends in the mythical town of Mystic Falls, Virginia.

The brothers are played by Paul Wesley (who played Tom Callahan in "Everwood") and Ian Somerhalder (Boone in the first season of "Lost"). They play Stefan and Damon Salvatore.

The audience for the premiere was the biggest in The CW's history, beating that of the previous year's premiere of 90210, but reviews so far have been mixed, and it will be interesting to see if the show can build on the continuing vampire lust from Twilight, Moonlight, and True Blood.

Many critics were saying that the series was a blatant rip-off of "Twilight" but this overlooks the fact that the series of books on which "Vampire Diaries" is based were published many years before "Twilight" so that is an invalid claim, but it has to be said that the publicity that "Twilight" received was almost certainly influential in the decision to go ahead with a TV series based on the books, plus of course, the success of HBO's "True Blood" played a significant part in the decision to go ahead, yet CBS's "Moonlight", a huge favorite with fans, was axed after only one season, much to the despair of its large vampire-loving fan base.

There has been a lot of interest in the music played in the  episodes. A lot of atmospheric songs were chosen by the show's producers to be featured in the soundtrack and the one song in the very first episode that seems to have attracted the biggest response in terms of interest and sales is "Running Up That Hill" by Placebo, a very good re-working of Kate Bush's original from many years ago.
